Towards a Gado 2 Reference Design

As I mentioned in my last post, things have been busy at Project Gado. In that vein, we now have a nearly-complete reference design for the Gado 2! On Tuesday, we began testing the new robot in the archives of the Afro American newspaper; this was supposed to happen after December 15th, so the project is a bit more than a month ahead of schedule.

Here is a video of the new Gado 2 scanning a photograph:

Note the sub-45-second scan time, at 600 dpi. The goal for the new design was 45 seconds, so we’re already ahead of where we need to be in terms of speed. With optimization, we’re hoping to shave another 5 second off that time.

In the next two months or so, we’ll be testing the new Gado 2, and working towards a formal version 0.1 release. Kits should be available some time in Q1 2012, although you’re always free to grab the current codebase, lasercut files and PCB designs, and make a Gado 2 yourself!
